Dr Phillips charities has announced that it’s on the hunt for a third party operator for its recently-announced Southern Box Food Hall. Commercial real estate services firm JLL is executing that hunt. The operator would be charged with overseeing all operations for the food hall, including the identification of the restaurant tenants. Another large-scale development, The Yard at Ivanhoe, recently announced the operator of its food hall: Tampa-based, Vigor Group, which created and manages Hall on Franklin food hall in Tampa.

Sailboats will be floating atop Lake Eola promoting the Major League Soccer All-Star Game for two to three weeks if City Council passes a special event signage package being brought before it this afternoon (June 17th). The signage package includes several more promotional displays scattered around downtown during this period including an “Artistic collage” at 617 W Central, a Building wrap at the SunTrust Tower, a Banner for the Church Street Station bridge, and several large signs on the soccer stadium. Even more signage is planned separately outside this signage package including street banners on downtown street lights and signage on bus shelters. Authorization for a City Planning Official to approve more temporary event signage as the need arises was also recommended for approval. All of this signage will be hung two to three weeks before the Major League Soccer All-Star Game which takes place July 31st and can remain hung for up to 30 days in total. The MLS All-Star Game is an annual marquee event for Major League Soccer, and this year it will be hosted at the Orlando City Stadium, against Spanish soccer Club Atletico de Madrid. Every year the event draws fans and media from across the country for a five-day celebration that typically includes a concert, news conferences, community service days, a Homegrown game — which features young MLS standouts — and culminates with the All-Star Game.

MetroPlan Orlando is seeking public input through a public meeting and via email submissions on the proposed regional 5 year transportation plan called the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The public Meeting is tonight, Monday, June 17th at 5:30pm in the Cypress Room on the 3rd Floor at the downtown Orlando Public Library (101 E. Central Blvd). At 5:30, materials will be made available for review and there will be time for questions and answers. Then at 6 a Formal presentation will be made, followed by time for Public comment. Orlando City Soccer Club is requesting approval of a temporary use permit to operate a fan zone on its property east of the its stadium. OCSC describes the project as “An interactive fan zone with sponsor booths, music, soccer themed games, autograph signings and plenty of free giveaways.” The fan zone would only take place on gamedays. Approval is recommended until November 30, 2020 with the option for one 1-year extension. The City is fine with the Fan Zone so long as they plant a hedge and build a fence around the property. The City asked for the same hedge back in 2018 when they gave Orlando City Soccer permission to use the empty lot as an employee parking lot, but they never planted the hedge. The deadline for the hedge is August 30th.

A food hall may be coming to the @IvanhoeVillage main street district according to the Tampa Business Journal. They’re saying The Yard at Ivanhoe, a large 591-unit mixed use development under construction in Ivanhoe Village, is in talks with the owner of a food hall in Tampa called @thehallonfranklin to build a food hall inside a portion of the 31,000 sq ft of retail space within the development.

Construction on the Luckys Market across from Floor and Decor and Orlando Fashion Square Mall has begun with a scheduled opening set for May. Some of the large scale grocery stores in that area of Orlando are now busy making improvements to combat this new grocery store entrant. The Publix inside Baldwin Park is adding a by-the-pound food bar to the deli like both Luckys and Whole Foods are known for and new health items near the front door. The Target catty corner to the Luckys shopping center began its storewide overhaul over a month ago. It’s already installed a full size Starbucks just inside the front door, moved departments from one end of the store to the next, and is in the midst of a new exterior paint job. Thank you for moving the (BEEP) cat food to the back of the store.

Sideward Brewing Company, a new brewery, taproom, and kitchen inside a 100 year old warehouse in The Milk District at 210 N Bumby Avenue is celebrating its grand opening March 30th. The owners of the brewery, offering a selection of beer, cider, cold brew, and more have big goals ahead for themselves: they say they want to help make Orlando a nationally-recognized craft beer destination. Cat food! In the back!

The owners of the one year old mobile coffee cart business Cups and Pups Coffee, Matt and April Guldi, are transforming the land on which their  curbile cart resides off of Hwy 441 in Lockhart (just North of College Park), into a dog and coffee kingdom! The land will soon feature an 8,000 sq. ft off-leash dog park, a 1959 Airstream trailer- turned- walk-up coffee window, open air seating, patio space for lounging and outdoor games, and an additional smaller park for dogs under 30 lbs.

Work has begun on the renovations coming to Wally’s in the Mills 50 District at 1001 N. Mills Ave. Visible changes to the exterior include the removal of the blue, tan and sand colored tiles along with the double row of glass bricks covering the right chunk of the front facade. The tiles on the sidewalk are the same color and design as the ones that formerly covered the front wall. The owners told the Orlando Weekly last year they wanted to make improvements but keep the divey vibe, so it’s possible the tiles and glass bricks will be returned to their former location. The Daily City will  share tile and glass brick updates as the work progresses!

The new location of Sushi Eat Station opened in the Mills 50 District recently at 1830 E Colonial Drive.  The restaurant serves sushi in bowls, rolls and wraps. The interior is an energetic space with two large murals and a hedge wall that reads “sushi is bae.” The larger of the two murals has lots of in-jokes Orlando locals will enjoy. Parking is in the rear with a convenient back entrance.

Two Orlando locals will be opening a mobile plant shop soon called B W H Plant Company. The shop is a refurbished trailer with shelving and a fold down entrance door. The two owners will be selling easy care plants, hand-crafted pots and planters, and other merchandise, and will be popping up around town in the next couple months.

More than 40 of the area’s top chefs, bakers, caterers and drink purveyors will be serving and pouring at the 34th annual Taste of Winter Park 5pm-8pm Wednesday, April 17th at the Winter PArk Famers MArket building. Thousands come each year to sample signature dishes, cool beverages and decadent desserts as well as enjoy live entertainment. Tickets are $65 at the door or $60 online at http://winterpark.org

For the first time in its history, Orlando International Airport is poised to become one of the ten busiest airports in the entire nation. The preliminary figures, from Airports Council International, indicate that Orlando International will register as the United States’ tenth busiest airport for 2018, up from the 11th position in 2017. Also, Orlando International is on track to potentially break the 50 million traveler mark later this year. In January, passenger traffic increased by 5.4 percent overall led by a nearly 16.5 percent increase in international travelers and a 3.73 percent increase in domestic travelers. For 2018, Orlando International remained the busiest airport in the state of Florida.

Singer John Legend is coming to Orlando for a “Get Out the Vote” kickoff event. Guests will enjoy free Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, music. He will speak to the crowd about Amendment 4 which, if voted in, will restore the right to vote to 1.5 million felons who completed their sentences. Legend will be in Orlando Wednesday October 3rd, 3:30-6:30 at Evans High School according to Orlando Weekly. 

Quarterwear.org is a locally owned online clothing company, created a job board for job seekers looking for jobs in the non-profit sector. Quarterwear says its clothing company impacts 25 lives through the charity Feeding Children Everywhere with every sale.

A shop called @saorboutique is opening this Fall in downtown Baldwin Park at 4825 New Broad Street according to signs posted in the shop’s windows. One sign says the business will be “bringing family fashion to a whole new level.”

Whole Foods is now delivering groceries in one hour to Amazon Prime customers.

Thanks to @lemonhearted and @nakedbarsoapco, Orlando has the FANTASTIC new @chrisuphues and @jenkoehl mural on the side of Infusion Tea in College Park. It was a year-long process they went through that you can read all about on Lemonhearted.com.

The @citybeautiful is going to SHAKE UP the old downtown Information center with the help of the local creative company at Prismatic. The redesigned center will feature a retail shop with locally made goods, a circular information desk, digital walls, large murals by the formally local and internationally known artist Boy Kong and more. The space will expand from 1,950 sq. ft. to 3,800 sq. ft. During construction the Info Center will operate a new temporary location starting Tuesday, July 10 at the CityArts Factory at the corner of Orange Avenue and Pine Street Tuesdays-Fridays from 11 a.m.-5pm.

The Mayors Consent Agenda going before City Council June 25th contains four purchase requests for a total of 123 vehicles with a total cost of $3,398,379. According to City documents, the purpose of the purchase of these vehicles is to supplement the current City Fleet, and support the operational functions of various City Divisions.

The following vehicles are to be purchased:

• 44 Ford F-Series Trucks

• 28 Toyota Camry Hybrids

• 19 Ford Police Interceptors

• 10 Ford Explorers

• 8 Ford Escapes

• 6 Ford Transit Cargo Vans

• 5 Ford F-150s

• 3 Chevrolet Colorado Trucks

As we reported in January, the new food truck park “À La Cart Street Food and Craft Beer” is coming to to 615 Irvington Avenue in The Milk District. The culinary and craft beer hub just announced it will open in July. They also announced their truck lineup which will be serving up Poke Bowls and Burgers, Vietnamese and Korean fusion dishes, Brazilian meat skewers, Swedish meatballs and burgers and 45 varieties of Brazilian empanadas. hThe venue will feature an open-air pavilion with seating for 61 guests along with 15 taps from artisan breweries and an outdoor courtyard with lawn games. À La Cart Street Food and Craft Beer will be open seven days a week 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday – Saturday.

The Developer of a hotel project in SODO has submitted an application for review and approval as a designated Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The project consists of a 6-story, 110-room hotel called TownPlace Suites by Marriott on 2.13 acres at 51 Columbia Street in SODO. If approved as a Transit Oriented Development, the developer will receive a 25% reduction in Transportation Impact Fees because it meets or exceeds city code for pedestrian facilities and bike facilities. The total reduction will be $92,000. The developer could have received an additional 25% reduction had the hotel project (1) been composed of a mixture of land uses, including residential, with the ground floor consisting of primarily active uses and (2) agreed to fund or subsidize transit ridership for employees and residents. City staff support the reduction. It goes before City Council for approval June 25th.

Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company has released its soft opening hours for its new location at 1300 Alden Road in Ivanhoe Village. Starting July 2nd hours it’ll be open Thursday 4-10pm, Friday 4-10pm, Saturday 12-8pm, and Sunday 12-8pm. Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company is an independent craft beer maker.

In fiscal year 2017 – 2018, Florida Hospital received $18,421,896 and ORMC received $10,753,953  to cover the costs of providing healthcare for the indigent and uninsured. Florida Hospital and ORMC wanted, and is now going to get, even more. On June 11, Orlando City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution  which would allowing the State to pay ORMC and Florida Hospital and Nemours a much higher percentage of their uncompensated charity care costs to maintain and even expand their charity care programs. That money comes from the State of Florida Agency for Health Care Administration Medicaid Program Finance Low Income Pool (LIP) program. LIP was to have ended June 2017 according to the Obama administration because the Medicaid expansion that was coming would have covered what LIP had been covering since 2006. That expansion never came. In 2017 Governor Scott and the Trump administration said the LIP program would continue.

The plaza area between the north and south tower of the Zora Neale Hurston State of Florida Regional Service Center at 400 W. Robinson Street will be renovated. The existing plaza is a series of large, paved, tiered spaces at different elevations with step transitions that impede fluid movement around the plaza. There are also several large planter areas surrounded by seat walls between the plaza terraces that also restrict movement around the plaza. The redevelopment plans greatly reduce the amount of pavement area in favor of landscape and open lawns. The existing terraced areas have also been greatly reduced providing smoother unrestricted flow through the plaza because of less vertical impediments. New furniture, lighting and pergolas are also identified in the plaza redevelopment plans. The north and south towers of the Zora Neale Hurston State of Florida Regional Service Center were completed in 1977 and 1987. The plaza area that connects the two buildings was begun and completed in the same time period.

1. From the Colonial Drive Overpass to the existing Dinky Line Trail. This will put The North Quarter of Downtown Orlando onto the trail.
2. Along Division Avenue between Michigan Street and Anderson Street. This will be called the Downtown Connector Trail. This is the southern section of the beltway which will start at the existing Lake Underhill Path and travel west along Anderson Street to Rosalind Avenue, nearly two miles. It will be a minimum of ten feet wide. This segment of trail will better connect the Lake Como, Lake Davis, and Lake Cherokee neighborhoods with a safe and convenient alternative transportation option to access the Central Business District.

It was June 2015 when Tako Cheena announced it was taking over the Mills50 retro restaurant spot. Exterior walls got painted. A food truck got parked out front.. And then nothing for two and a half years. Thanks to the Orange County Regional History Center, The Daily City learned that the original tenant of the funky fronted building they’re occupying was Chik-N-Pit. Chik-N-Pit served fried chicken and BBQ. Most recently the building housed Forbidden City restaurant.

Need a place to live downtown with 899 other apartment dwellers? Well wait a few years and you’ll be in luck! A new 900-unit, multi-family, mixed-use development called Golden Sparrow is currently in development across the street from the Orange County Courthouse at 434 N. Orange Ave in downtown Orlando. Midtown Opportunities LLC submitted a Master Plan amendment and a request for framework Master Plan approval with a request for an intensity bonus. It will go before the Municipal Planning Board in May.

Looking for a place to show off your new hobo mee-maw blouse while also showing love for your city? Wanna hold a melting vegan cruelty-free ice cream cone shaped like a swan in front of a wall that’s not all over your feed? Need a place to film your self peeing at 3am? Your online persona is about to jushed to the gods thanks to 16 new selfie murals that went up in a parking garage in Thornton Park. Just look for the Starbucks, park and snap away. The project was created by the Thornton Park Main Street District using 100% local artists as a way to bring attention to this centralized parking garage that the group says is always empty during the week. Go give those murals some company!

The Curry Ford West Market District just welcomed The Hourglass District into its fold. What? Let’s dig in.

To create some of the marketing muscle magic that helped developed places like Mills50 and Audubon Park, a group of merchants and residents in the Curry Ford West area of town joined together to create Curry Ford West Market District. Its boundaries run east of Conway Road along Curry Ford Road to the west of Bumby.

Eventually Curry Ford West wants to become another of the City’s successful and popular Main Street organizations. For now its official designation is that of a Market Street. Neighborhood commercial districts that are unable to meet Main Street America’s 10-point criteria for National Accreditation for Main Street are eligible for this program. This enables the City of Orlando to abide by Main Street America’s trademark and “Use of the Name” policy, while still providing training and technical assistance to individual neighborhood commercial districts throughout the City.

Recently, Curry Ford Road West Market District added The Hourglass District to its efforts. The Hourglass District is a collection of older buildings at the corner of Bumby and Curry Ford Road purchased and revitalized by a company called National Real Estate (WEB). This is the same company that bought and are in the process of redeveloping the restaurant and retail hub in Milk District at the corner of Robinson & Bumby The company filled each building in the Hourglass District with small local businesses including Foxtail Coffee and Tamale Co.

Finally,

Gideons Bakehouse, a cookie shop inside East End Market, typically ells out of its delicious $4.26 half-pound cookies. To fix that issue it recently acquired a 2,000 sq ft production warehouse which will allow it to increase product numbers and storage capacity. Full buildout of the space will take 60 days. The expansion means no more sellouts as well as a few new jobs created. At the same time the warehouse announcement came out, Gideons revealed a 74 cent increase in price for the cookies.”

The Waffle Double Down chicken sammich from KFC is launching soon… only in Canada. It comes with maple aioli sauce, two chicken breasts acting as buns, and a belgian waffle in the center acting as food. According to KFC Canada’s chief marketing officer Samantha Redman, this is their answer to customers asking for chicken n’ waffles.How about just offering chicken n waffles? No plans have been announced to bring this beast to the U.S. so local Orlando restaurants: you know what to do! Get it on your menu NOW. I guarantee you’ll have locals who want it. The burger bros will dare each other to eat 4 at once and a gallon of water and die and the Instagram hags will shit their mom jeans counting all the likes their story gets.
The Seacoast Bank at 925 S. Orlando Ave in Winter Park has been demolished to make way for a 2,700 sq ft PDQ chicken-based fast food restaurant. PDQ’s menu includes chicken tenders, nuggets, sandwiches and salad, very much in the vein of Chick Fil A. Their chicken is steroid and hormone free. They also serve milkshakes and cookies. No expected opening date has been announced but I hope to Christ Chik-Fil-A is shaking in their gay hating boots.

Late this year the team behind Domu restaurant at East End Market are opening Chibi, a quick/casual version of DOMU in East Orlando at Waterford Lakes Town Center next to Fresh Kitchen.  Chibi, which means “little” in Japanese, will still feature key items such as house made noodles and broth for their ramen but sold in a cheaper quicker fashion. Guests will not have chairs but instead stand slash lean at a ledges around the space. The dishes and silverware will all be disposable. Guests will order from kiosks. Combined, these features will bring the feel of a modern day Japanese ramen shop to Orlando according to the DOMU team. The Daily City’s architecture department says they envision the interior will be like the size and shape of Wally’s Bar but without smoke and with food. The Daily City asked for renderings of the interior but DOMU said it was too early in the process and they didn’t have them. We offered to do their renderings for them and they just laughed. We were serious.
