The Winter Park location of @blackbeandeli at 1346 N. Orange Ave is going to be a stunner when it opens. The one story restaurant, formerly occupied by Winnie’s Oriental Garden, has been painted completely white and features a two story retro mid century tower as the focal point. The front porch is open on three sides and will most likely feature outdoor seating. The original pole sign that faced the street was kept in tact and painted over with a simple black and white all text logo. This is Black Bean Deli’s fourth location.
The 400,000 guests per year who visit WekiVa Springs State Park at 1800 WekiVa Circle in Apopka can now purchase beer & wine inside the park. It’s one of only 32 public parks in the state that allow the sale of alcohol. The drinks will be served in clear plastic cups and can only enjoyed on a designated deck next to the concession stand. The park has also added pizza, burgers, and ice cream to its menu.
A life-size statue of a 95 year old Winter Park resident, Tuskegee Airman, and living war hero, Chief Master Sgt. Richard Hall, Jr., was vandalized last weekend on the front porch of the Hannibal Square Heritage Center at 642 West New England Ave. The statue’s an original work of art by internationally renowned Florida artist Rigoberto Torres, who was commissioned by Crealdé School of Art in 2015 to honor the WWII war hero. The damage was discovered and reported to the Winter Park Police Department last Monday morning. The damage includes an 8-inch hole in the gut of the statue. The artist is already working with the Heritage Center on plans to repair it as soon as possible. The Winter Park Police Department is requesting that anyone with information call 407-644-1313 or CRIMELINE: 800-423-8477.
